MODEL MINORITY- NEW SAINT
Releases July 1, 2021
New Saint’s debut studio album, ‘MODEL MINORITY’ tackles his experience as a first generation immigrant moving to Canada from the Philippines and confronts colonialism head on.
In a year impacted by racism, hate, and xenophobia, ‘MODEL MINORITY’, is an album by the local Calgary musician whose direct experience in these areas affected his recent musical release. Consisting of 16 tracks the project deviates from his usual chill-hop musical backdrop and shifts towards a more raw, brutally honest "in-your-face" sound.
Prior to the project's release, New Saint dropped two singles ‘PARANOID’ and ‘CLONE HIGH’. The former details the struggle with the anxiety that comes from his years experiencing bullying and racism as an immigrant Filipino-Chinese kid, moving to and living in rural Alberta, while the former, deals with his anger and frustration with how the music industry treats and stereotypes artists of Asian and/or POC descent.
Outspoken, and brutally honest about the current social climate, New Saint has gained attention on social media platforms Tik Tok and instagram, and was featured on CBC Radio to talk about the pressures of living up to the Model Minority stereotypes imposed on Asian Artists.
Following the release of the album, New Saint will be releasing the music video for ‘PARANOID’ and will be featured in Cartel Madras’s Documentary premiering during Calgary’s Sled Island Music Festival in July.
